Down East “lobster yachts” evolved from no-nonsense, seaworthy working boats proven comfortable in rough conditions. They’re made to be efficient, and simple enough to need minimal care. Back Cove’s new 37 Salon Express improves on that tradition with modern hull shape, materials and construction techniques.
Vacuum-infused fiberglass construction reduces weight and styrene emissions. Unlike its softbilged workboat cousins, the Back Cove 37’s modified-V hull has hard chines and lifting strakes. A single, open-shaft inboard with the propeller spinning in a shallow pocket replaces the keel and keeps the draft reasonable.
A single-lever throttle/ shift control, a standard bow thruster and an optional ($5,270) stern thruster mounted under the swim platform make close-quarters maneuvering easier for newcomers. The single Yanmar 6CX electronic diesel in our test boat offered great cruising performance at both trawler (around 8 mph) and semiplaning (13 to 18 mph) speeds, with a still economical fast cruise in the mid-20s.
The 37’s living space provides surprising privacy and flexibility, primarily due to having the dinette and galley in the pilothouse. as a result, the two sleeping cabins belowdecks are large, allowing two couples to weekend aboard in truly separate spaces. There’s an island queen berth in the forepeak and a double berth to starboard, opposite the head with its separate shower. Or convert one stateroom to an office and make extended cruises with just your mate. I also liked that the salon could be opened to the cockpit via folding companionway doors. This would enable entertaining a dozen dinner guests, especially with the wraparound transom settee.
The helm provides great visibility and enables the skipper to mingle from highend stidd seats. A standard 9 kw generator supplies juice when under way or on the hook (deployed by the standard anchor windlass). Generous fuel, water and waste capacities make the 37 a long-legged coastal cruiser.
