In addition to your engine’s manufacturer or boat dealer, you can purchase universal safety lanyards, like this Kwik-Tek model from marine retailers.

National Safe Boating Week begins Saturday, May 18. Convincing boaters to wear lifejackets is one of the boating safety campaign’s biggest initiatives. We applaud the campaign and encourage voluntary wearing of PFDs.

Boating Safety Is No Joke

Governments and organizations the world over proclaim all kinds of commemorative days and weeks. Some of these are as recognizable in name as they are for their intended purpose. Examples include National Non-Smoking Week, National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week, National Hurricane Preparedness Week and National Mental Health Week.

But some commemorations of the calendar are less well known and seemingly created either to benefit special interests more than the public good, or to decry another special interest’s interests. It all depends upon your point of view.

Sharing a pole or piling? Dipping your line through your neighbor's loop allows either line to be removed without disturbing the other.

The title says it all. If you have any more suggestions, post them in the comment box below.

1. When fueling-up or loading, move your boat from the fuel dock or loading float as soon as you are done. Do not exceed the time limits without the dock master’s permission.

2. Keep your speed down when entering. Not disturbing your new neighbors will keep them happy.

3. If you use the head, use your head: ensure that it goes into your holding tank, not overboard.

Eric Brossier and family: True boating adventurers.

BOATING has crossed the Bering Strait aboard a PWC, trailered a boat the length of Baja, and ran an outboard-powered Pro-Line from Maine to Mexico via the Mississippi River, Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. We’ve run boats through narrow canyons roiling with white water, raced a Cigarette boat against a Ferrari Testarossa on, and alongside, Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida, Keys. We are the custodians of the Bermuda Challenge, presenting two awards to intrepid mariners for their courage, persistence and seamanship just this year.

Bermuda Challenge record setters at the 2013 Miami International Boat Show.

In August 2012, Chris Fertig and Tyson Garvin set a new Bermuda Challenge record in a Mercury Diesel Powered Statement Marine 37 SUV. Six weeks later, their record was smashed when Fabio Buzzi, in a boat of his own design powered by FPT diesel, entered Town Cut Channel, Bermuda.

Celebrating 30 years, Sea Tow provides a range of services to boaters beyond towing.

If you’ve been boating as long as we have, then you surely remember the days when Coast Guard would provide non-emergency towing and assistance services to boaters on the water. In 1982, they stopped that practice, deploying their resources and expertise only for true boating emergencies. (Running aground in 3 feet of water may be serious, but its generally not life-threatening).

World’s Fastest Electric Boat

hile we still think electric power is promising, though not yet practical for most boaters, we applaud all efforts to push the envelope. That’s the only way the technology will advance to the point of providing boaters with the performance and run time they need and expect.
