The record-setting Recovery Racing
Today there’s a new speed record for circling Long Island, New York, in a boat. Stuart Hayim, New York area luxury car dealer and a veteran powerboat racer, set the new speed record this morning. Driving his custom 43-foot MTI power catamaran called Recovery, and with John Tomlinson at the throttle, Hayim posted a time of 2 hours and 11 minutes, shattering the old mark–set last year–by over an hour.
Powered by twin Mercury Racing 1350’s, Recovery averaged 121.37 mph over the 265 mile course, which ran east from Manhasset Bay around Orient Point and Montauk Point, then west along Long Island’s South Shore before circling back through New York City.
“We went under the 59th Street Bridge at 150 miles per hour,” said Hayim after the run. “I said to Johnny [Tomlinson, the throttle man.], ‘Whoever’s up there stuck in traffic got a really cool view on their way to work.'”
Hayim’s goal in making the run is to raise money for the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, which funds cancer research. Hayim himself was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1979, and dreamed of owning a fast boat if he beat it, which he did. Hayim hopes to raise $100,000 by September 12th, and is quick to point out that every dollar donated goes directly to cancer research.
