To say Regal’s 2500 is a dream to drive would be almost selling the boat short. On the water, it handles beautifully, smoothly rolling into the tightest of corners without a hint of bucking or the prop losing its grip. Our test boat’s 300 hp Volvo Penta V-8 Duoprop only heightened that response. It put the hull on plane in 3.9 seconds, displayed the type of impressive midrange power that kept the boat from bogging down in those hairpin turns, and boasted a peak speed just shy of 50 mph. Of course, Regal’s FasTrac hull deserves some of that credit. It displays a full mid-V step, designed to increase speed and fuel efficiency by funneling friction-reducing air under the hull. Wondering about its cruising potential? At 3,000 rpm, the engine consumed 8.1 gallons per hour while the hull happily settled in nice and stable at 27 mph.

Regal has put equal thought into the 2500’s interior. Because it recognizes that most passengers recline in the bow, seat bottoms feature a midcushion rise to offer support below the knees. The smoked Lexan wind block in the windshield walk-through secures with low-profile magnetic catches in both the closed and open positions, a convenience feature we applaud and would like to see emulated aboard other boats. The windshield’s cap is polished stainless steel, which is rugged and looks great. The 3-foot-deep head compartment in the port console includes a counter with sink, port-a-potty and faux teak traction mat. And then there’s the versatile seating. Wraparound benches span port, starboard and stern. Behind, twin UltraLounge sun pads, with a teak-floor center walk-through, face the swim platform. Their backrests and cushions can be pivoted into any of four positions, including aft-facing recliners.

Our test boat featured several attractive options. Check out the PowerTower, an elevated water-sports arch that raises and lowers without muscle, but instead at the flick of a switch. Another favorite is the Regal View touch-screen dash display. It goes beyond simple controls and monitoring of vital functions to include cruise control and GPS with chart plotter.
