We Say: With the Cobalt 220S you still get the performance that Cobalt is known for, and you get many big-boat amenities, in a package that has a more value-oriented price tag.
The “S” in the name designates a new cockpit layout alternative for 2014. The portside cockpit seating allows a passenger to face forward in front of the port console. Its backrest adjusts for a rear-facing lounge or a fully reclined sun pad. There’s a larger sun pad over the engine box and a transom walk-through to port that accesses the extended swim platform with stainless-steel piping and Cobalt’s signature flip-down swim step.
Our test boat featured the optional aluminum arch with a canvas Bimini shade. The arch can be completely lowered by hand for passing under bridges, trailering or storing the boat in a garage.
On the water, the 220S accelerated to 50 mph, according to our GPS, plenty fast for a 22-foot boat. We carved graceful hard-over turns at 30 mph, a tribute to the 220’s stability and well-designed hull mated with a Duoprop sterndrive.
