Cobalt 24SD WSS

The 24SD WSS blends tow boat features with family amenities.

We Say: Cobalt’s new crossover, the 24SD WSS (Water Sports Series), is eye-pleasing and combines the best of a dedicated tow boat with the family amenities of a sterndrive.

The boat is beautifully top-shelf and priced for the discriminating buyer, with brand panache and superior fit and finish clearly integrated. Its cockpit space is maximized with what Cobalt calls “space reclamation.” It uses volume traditionally tucked behind or under other appointments. Convertible features also conserve space. An aft rumble seat and a passenger console seat that converts to an aft-facing lounge are nicely done. Forward seating pampers as well, using foldaway armrests for comfort and security.

Even hidden spaces like the changing compartment are decoratively finished. Upholstery is perfect; durable synthetic materials are form-fitted over the helm-station pod, giving an opulent look more often found in a luxury car. Cobalt’s aggressive WSS package with tower ($11,333 upcharge) accommodates board sports with rotating board racks.

Who’d Want One: A lake-home family boater entertaining sports-hungry kids.

Another Choice: Chaparral’s SSi 246 ($80,892 with tower and sporty gelcoat package) has the water-sports DNA when equipped with the tower and a well-appointed, roomy cockpit to handle a crowd. If you just want the great deck plan, its base price with 320 hp is $73,346.

Bottom Line: $98,438 (with test power and WSS package); cobaltboats.com
