This boat set a new Bermuda Challenge record last August: New York to Bermuda in 21 hours, 39 minutes. We tested it during pre-challenge trials and so were carrying 400 gallons of fuel, which is 150 gallons more than the standard tankage. We also had a battalion of Mercury engineers aboard dialing in the very first Mercury TDI diesel sterndrive package installed. Despite all that extra weight, the Statement 37 proved fast and nimble. It hit 51 mph and made soft going of four-foot whitecaps during our test. It flew level, landed with a smoosh and never felt skittish during turns. And, test-day ballast notwithstanding, it delivered better than 2 mpg.

The reasons for this performance? Vacuum-controlled dual turbochargers help Mercury’s TDI diesels sip fuel; construction is vacuum-bagged vinylester resin and biaxial cloth to maintain strength and stiffness while curbing weight; the hull sports a length-to-beam ratio of almost 4:1; and the stepped bottom boasts 24 degrees of transom deadrise.
