[January 1, 2004]Weird Baits That WorkThe latest hot bait for catching weakfish in the Chesapeake Bay is strips of raw chicken breast, dyed green, blue, or red with food coloring. Cluck, cluck, yuck-I refuse to bait my hooks with bird parts. But it reminds me of the strange and crazy things I've seen fish eat over the years. And even though it seems outrageous to hack a flightless bird and use it to catch a fish, I'm sure that a lot of guys are successful at turning hens into hookups.

[January 1, 2002]Fly by NightFishermen are always looking for that silver bullet: a bait that will have fish opening wide no matter how tight their previous lockjaw. But such a magic bait just doesn't exist-or does it? Slow-trolled or live-lined flying fish can tempt tunas and billfish almost all the time. But where do you find spunky, live flying fish? They're not a mainstay in most tackle shops. Solution? Get them on your own; all you need are some powerful lights, a long-handled dip net, and a livewell.

[July 1, 2001]On the TrollFishermen have more questions than a three-year-old-throw a fish on the dock and everyone wants to know where, when, and how. Respond by saying, "I was slow trolling," and the result is often strange looks and more questions. But the technique's effectiveness makes it worth learning.
