[April 20, 2004]Spring Tackle Maintenance SnafusAfter decades of experience, I have committed just about every spring tackle maintenance snafu known to mankind. That said, I'm sure I'll discover a few new ones this year. But as you settle onto the couch with a reel in one hand and a can of CorrosionX in the other, remember, I performed these maintenance no-nos so you won't have to.

[July 1, 2003]Solar FlarePflueger is known for its classic fly gear, but its new Solara spinning combinations might change all that. I tested a Solara PFL SOL66 combo, which consists of a Solara 5735 spinning reel (235 yards of eight-pound test, six ball bearings, 5.2:1 ratio, 14 ounces) matched with a medium-light IM-8 graphite rod with cork handles, stainless-steel guides, and Fuji reel seats. Tossing crankbaits to bass, pickerel, and perch, I could feel every wiggle of the lure through this rod. The reel is smooth and has an instant antireverse. I like that Pflueger includes a spare aluminum spool.

[May 1, 2003]Get CrankyWhen it comes to fishing tackle, lefty anglers often get the short end of the stick. Most lever drag reels don't have left-handed models and aren't adjustable. So Penn introduced the 246LD, a lefties-only lever drag reel that can take on gamefish. The 246LD has a one-piece graphite frame, anodized aluminum spool, four stainless-steel ball bearings, and machined stainless-steel gears. It holds 475 yards of 30-pound test line and has a 3.9:1 gear ratio, for a good balance of speed and cranking power.
