[June 15, 2004]Ca$ting LessonOn a recent fishing trip, I watched in horror as $1,200 worth of fly rod and reel flipped over the side and sank. It was then that I realized my fly-fishing habit was growing much too expensive. So I searched for the best value fly rod and reel that would get me back on the water for under $400, which-in the sticker-shock world of fly-fishing-qualifies as a steal. Here's a rod and reel combo that's worked well for me.

[February 1, 2004]8 Things NOT To Do with Your BaitYou've heard and read a thousand times what to do with your baits. Cut them at an nth-degree angle, hook them this way, fish them that way. But do you know what not to do? Here are a few things I've learned the hard way.
[1] Don't soak ballyhoo in formaldehyde. Sure it toughens them, but I've seen too many rejected to ever do it again.
[2] Don't put leftover live eels in a fish tank. They can slither out, which can be frightening at 3 a.m.

[January 1, 2004]Weird Baits That WorkThe latest hot bait for catching weakfish in the Chesapeake Bay is strips of raw chicken breast, dyed green, blue, or red with food coloring. Cluck, cluck, yuck-I refuse to bait my hooks with bird parts. But it reminds me of the strange and crazy things I've seen fish eat over the years. And even though it seems outrageous to hack a flightless bird and use it to catch a fish, I'm sure that a lot of guys are successful at turning hens into hookups.
