Hey George first those two holes are there to allow water to drain out, they allow water into passages to help cool the lower unit, now the gear lube leaking out sounds like you might have a crack in the drive, you didn't say how cold it got, the thing to do now is to pressure test the drive, that will really tell you if it's cracked or not, keep your fingers crossed and good luck :-)
how do you pressure test drive its off the boat...
Just take it to any marina and ask them to pressure test it for you, they will pump up the pressure to a certain pressure and leave it sit and see if the pressure bleeds off or if it leaks that bad can tell you right away, like I said keep your fingers crossed, good luck :-)
You can get a compression tester from auto parts store, which is fancy pump with a PSI gauge built in, and pump in air via one of the lube vent/fill holes. Or you could rig any pump with a gauge and insert in the fill hole, pump up to the spec pressure for your drive ( get a service manual, google, etc) and see if it holds that pressure for the spec'd time ( manual again)
You'll need to fit the same fitting that you use to fill the drive with oil to the end of your air pump hose.
