How does it run when you apply throttle and cruise? Does the same thing happen?
It COULD be:
1. Carb needs rebuilding
2. Fuel pump is going.
Before taking to a mechanic--try a carb cleaner product like GUNK and follow the directions on the label. You may get off cheap.

sounds like idle circuit in carb is restricted.
