Q. 1997 Johnson 225 V6 outboard HP ocean runner. At different intervals/Starts the engine will not operate above 2700 rpm.
When engine starts to skip at 2700 rpm and will not go above this rpm. Restart the engine and the engine will operate normal. This engine has been rebuilt within the last 20 hours of run time. All new electrical,trigger/Timer base, coils, power pack, wiring, spark plugs, stator and a different fly wheel. All wiring grounds have been cleaned, heat sensors been checked. This can only be detected with a load on the engine In the water. This SKIP occurs one time out of up to six or eight time of normal operating. The motor will skip at 2700 rpm and will not go over this rpm. Model # J225TXEUD/outboard Thanks Stan Barrett

Hi Stan
Sorry for the delayed answer. Been traveling extensively. However, my travels coincided with your question!
I posed your question to Mike Rogge, Senior Engineering Technician at the Ralph Evinrude Test Center is Stuart, FL. , while doing some research for an upcoming article on fuel efficiency. Mike says that Johnsons of that vintage sometimes developed a fault in the shift interrupt switch. The symptoms are identical to what you described. Therefore, while its always chancy diagnosing problems from afar, I'd suggest you have your tech troubleshoot the shift interrupt. It SHOULD solve your problem.
Good Luck
Kevin
