Will I damage inboard transmission to cruise a 2000 rpm with only one motor running.
Have heard you can damage motor and or transmission if you run on only 1 motor-some say due to drag and lack of lubrication to shaft packing. Some say leave motor in gear- keeps prop from spining when motor is turned off. I am talking at slow speed 8-10 knots- 1 motor on at 2000/2250 rpm. Advise. Thank you.

Hi Tom
If you have conventional stuffing boxes--old-school ones, those designed to drip a bit--the bearing will be lubed while the the prop is turning, regardless if the engine is running or not. If you have dripless "stuffing boxes"--face seals, lip seals, etc--many of these systems are cooled and lubed by engine cooling water. If you look at one of these seals, you'll see the black hose that carries this water to the seal. If the engine is off, and this type of "stuffing box" isnt getting water damage can occur.
Now, allowing a prop to spin while the engine is off will cause damage to the transmission, including its bearigs and seals.
Therefore, with these two factors in mind, if you want or need to run on one engine, place the dead engine in reverse. That way the prop wont spin, the shaft wont need lubrication or cooling, and your tranny will be happier.
