I have a 1987 34' Silverton. I'm removing the bow rail. What is the best type of sealant to use the rubber gaskets?
I would use the 3m 4200 not the fast cure as it sets up too fast , I would put the base on the fibreglass and tape around it , remove the base, put the 4200 on then put the base back on, now when it comes out as you tighten it the tape will help keep it from going all over, now to smooth the 4200 around the base take some rubber gloves (have a good supply on hand) and paper towel , put on a glove , have a small container of dish soap and water , dip finger in it now smooth the 4200 then let it dry, it should be nice and smooth, and look nice , Good luck. :-)
Great advice. Just note that 4200 is now only available in fast cure. ( were you thinking about 101?)
Sorry I forgot that it only came in fast cure, 101 will do the same job,and if you can get it in UV formula thats even better, just don't use silicone for this job, it's to thin and will not seal properly or hold as well, good luck. :-)
I avoid silicone whenever possible. Polysulfides and Polyurethanes last longer IMHO. Sikaflex 291 is another good option.
