Correct Prop for a 2011 Cobalt 210
I just purchased a 2011 Cobalt 210 with a 350 mag brovo 3 setup. During the orientation/test drive the boat hit the rev limiter 3 different times in choppy conditions and with the engine trimmed down! The deal said the boat was delivered with 22 inch props and should have 26 inch. However when tested with 26 inch it is still hitting the rev limiter. I am concerned that they might have put the wrong gear ratio in the outdrive at the factory.... Has anyone heard of this problem occuring? Does anyone have any advice?

Adding 4 inches of pitch should certainly have slowed your engine speed at WOT. Pardon my asking, but are you sure you aren't over-trimming? Or, i mean maybe the trim gauge isn't working and you arent actualy trimmed down? When the boat is stopped, turn the key to ON and check the actual trim against the gauge.
What RPM are you making at WOT?
Have you broached the subject with Cobalt?
Typically, the drive ratio is on a sticker on the side of the drive. It should still be there aboard a brand new boat. Also, the serial number will ID the drive: write it down and contact Mercruiser.

Thanks for your response.
The boat hit the rev limiter first when half trimmed up. Then we trimmed it all the way down and still hit the limiter. I have not even gotten the boat home yet. This all happened during the test drive at the dealership. We took it out with the salesman on the test drive and it over reved with him driving and me driving. I paid for the boat over two weeks ago and they are still messing with it at the dealership...unable to get the correct prop to keep it from hitting the rev limit. There appears to be an issue with cobalt matching up the correct propeller size with motor on the 2011's. The dealer said this isnt the first boat this year to have this problem. I think I make take your advice and call cobalt and mercruiser and see if they know something the dealership doesn’t.
This is my first cobalt .... and i am fairly disappointed so far.
Dont be too discouraged. One, new boats--especially new model new boats--often have some bugs to be worked out. That usually conflicts with the desire for a spring launch as soon as possible. I know you don't want to hear it, but be patient.
Second, Cobalt does a better job than most on both the engineering and customer service front. Besides the quality construction, fine finish and good ride, that's part of what you pay a premium for to own one. That said, they are still human and mistakes can happen. My money is on them " making it right."

Gaven,
Thank you for your response. We are hoping to receive the boat sometime today. The dealer determined that a 28inch prop better suites that boat/motor/outdrive combination.
I don’t mean to direct my disappointment toward anyone in particular. I can see that you and the rest of Cobalt staff are devoted to your work and customers. I have been in contact with the service department at the dealership almost every day and they have worked very hard to test and configure the boat with the correct prop. And they have been kind enough to update me almost daily as to their progress. Therefore my disappointment doesn’t necessarily reflect on all aspects of Cobalt, so I apologize for generalization of my comment.
Again, thank you for your response. It is rare to find a company representative contacting the customer and offering help! If you have the time there are a few issues I would like to discuss with you, regarding the delaying in delivery, the not-to-spec prop and the impact a different prop may have on the outdrive, motor and warranty.
I plan to contact you next week.
Sincerely
Cobalt210
Update: The boat ran great all season! Kevin and Gaven, thanks for your help. I can now see why Cobalt Boats are held with such high regard. Once again I have to give thanks to the service department at my local cobalt dealership! Always willing to take the time to explain and resolve any potential issues.
The boat sounds great and with the 350mag and is FAST.
