Engine Misses at WOT

in

I have a 1990 Bayliner with a 4.3l Mercruiser sterndrive. The engine misses at WOT (4300 RPM). I've replaced the plugs & wiring, rotor, distributor and cap, carburetor, fuel filter and checked the timing. I'm now thinking either the fuel pump or electronic module in the distributor which wasn't included with the new distributor. Any other ideas?Dave Evans  Georgian Bay, Canada

Question:

Hey Dave WOW thats an expensive check list, I know what those parts cost, heres a thought, have you or did you check the timing chain? Did you check the valve timing? And is the distributor right on, I would go first with the timing chain being a 1990 engine, sounds like it might have slipped a tooth, also while your at it do a compression test, also CTC/Parts source had one of those inspection cameras on sale, you can check the condition of the cylinders and valves with it, also the V6s had a problem with head gaskets, but I would check the timing chain, and make sure the engine is a TDC then check the distributor, also recheck the plugs you may have gotten a bad new plug, I've seen that happen, anyways good luck Myles Kingston ont

You should also check your fuel filters/water separators. Clogged or even partially clogged units can restrict fuel flow in high demand situations.
