Well, you can use a boat hook to pick up the painter. Then also have a line with a hook tied to your bow eye. Hook the line tied to the bow eye and bring it on deck. Then hook the mooring painter and bring that up and connect the two hooks. That way everything can be done on deck, without having to lean over the bow and try to reach the eye.
