Designed for families who enjoy water sports in waters salty and sweet, the 2016 Star Step 230 OB model from Starcraft hits all the key points. The fiberglass hull, outboard power and bow-boarding option make the Star Step deck boat a great choice for coastal boaters who want to “beach it” between bouts of tow sports, fishing or cruising. Everyone will appreciate the security of the deep cockpit and the protection the high gunwales offer from wind and spray. Even the forward seating area is a bit deeper than comparable deck boats, yet it provides a handy egress option on the bow in the form of a second boarding ladder that flips out of a flush-mounted compartment and telescopes for use when the boat is beached or bobbing at anchor.

At the stern, the Star Step’s cockpit actually offers two access options for getting to the swim platform in the form of two removable seat-back panels in the cockpit’s surround-seating area. Once aft, passengers will find a ski tow pylon flanked by a boarding ladder on the extended port platform and a flush-mounted storage locker on the starboard side.

An enclosed head compartment with a sink built into the port passenger console doubles as a changing room and storage area.Snap-in sea-weave mats on the cockpit and forward decks allow for easy cleaning.

Complementing the passenger and helm consoles are twin bucket seats with flip-up bolsters. A fully appointed dash features an Infinity stereo system with Bluetooth connectivity. In the cockpit, a large in-floor storage area is capable of containing everything from water skis and wakeboards to fishing tackle.

The ride of this Starcraft deck boat is as comfortable as its accommodations thanks to the stepped hull that cushions the running surface, adding efficiency that boosts the boat’s fuel economy and cruising range. We topped 40 mph with a Yamaha F200 on the transom, and the boat is rated for a full 50 horsepower more.
