Advantages of Outboard Runabouts

Outboard runabouts have some distinct advantages. In fact, the only reason the stern drive has ruled the the roost in this market niche has been cost. But with environmental controls come additional costs, so several builders, including Ebbtide, Glastron and Rinker are now offering outboard propulsion on these popular family boats. What are the advantages?

Better Horsepower-to-Weight Ratio: Outboards produce more power for the same weight compared to a sterndrive. Think of it this way: powering with a sterndrive is like carrying two more crew aboard compared to an outboard.

Corrosion Resistance: Outboards are the only “true” marine engines. Everything else is converted from automotive, Additonally, an outboard tilts completely clear of the water.

Cockpit Space: Outboard’s open up a boat’s layout since the engine is well, out-board of the boat. For the same LOA, there is more cockpit space with an outboard.

Shallower Draft: Outboards can tilt free and clear of the water.

User–Friendly: No bilge to sniff, no blower to run, easier to service…just tilt it down and go!
