Cigarette 39 Top Fish

Cigarette's 39 Top Fish is forgiving and easy to handle at high speeds.

I want to be first to the fish. So give me a badass carving knife of a center console with firepower hanging off the transom in spades. Such is the mindset of the kingfish angler, and many others who want their boats to be fast and tough. Entering the kingfish tournament-style center console market a little late in the game, Cigarette wanted to make a statement to these guys. Enter the new 39 Top Fish; throttling up the four big 300-hp Mercury Optimax outboards pushed this sturdy boat to a whopping 76.5mph top end. Statement enough?

Pulling back to 50mph I carved graceful corners with a nimble responsiveness that lacked the squirrelly characteristics found in many performance hulls. Cutting across a leftover swell the 39 Top Fish gripped the surface like a larger, heavier boat, and resisted the tendency to become airborne. Glancing across the dash, dedicated space for racing throttles and controls, engine readouts, centrally located electronics, toggle switches with indicator lights, and stainless tachometer gauges made me feel like a pilot ready for takeoff. Good thing there was plenty of holds at the helm and on the powder-coated color coordinated T-Top. Leaning back against the plush standard leaning post gave my lower back a comfortable rest.

Pulling back to trolling speed the four outboards tossed considerable white-water. On the drift, however, she sat remarkably stable for a deep-V. Catering to the family man is apparent, with amenities that provide for the wife and kids without removing bachelor appeal. The oversized console head may be the biggest I’ve seen on a center console. Access is through a large swinging door, reminiscent of those found on Italian sports cars, with its outward swiveling custom composite hinge. Moving into the forward cabin reveals a plush bed perfect for a quick nap or overnight jaunt. Electrical outlets in the cabin and head keep cell phones charged at night and the wife’s hair styled in the morning. The carbon fiber switch panel holds a gamut of necessary controls as well as the powerful stereo system. Walking the length of the boat I was never more than an arms reach from a speaker. A hatch-accessed wet bar atop the cabin, drink holders everywhere, and optional blue mood lights also keep the party going.

Plush coaming bolsters provide added comfort while the stern bench seat folds up to provide a second leaning post. Fishing accessories include a 55 gallon transom live well, another hatch with room for a five gallon bucket, twin in deck 6′ x 1.5′ x 1.5′ fishboxes, and four standard gunwale mounted rod holders. But this is much more than your ordinary high-speed fish boat. Whether your taking the family to the sandbar, fishing with the boys, or racing down Miami beach, the Cigarette 39 Top Fish stands ready for the task, and looks damn good doing it.

Highs: Powerful lighting in the rear bilge compartment adds nighttime safety. Finish is a touch above with custom colors, abundant cigarette emblems, and plush amenities. Forgiving and easy to handle at high speeds.

Lows: Cumbersome length makes a bow thruster a desirable addition. The stern bilge hatch had a limited range of movement from the hatch lid hitting the stern bench seat.

Toughest Competitor: The Fountain 38 Tournament Edition is another fast and fishy CC with a small cabin. When powered by triple 275 hp Mercury Verados it runs $263,333.
