Larson 23 Super Sport

Beneath Larson’s All American 23 lurked an even more popular and sporty version of this classic — the Larson 23 Super Sport.

The 23 SS swapped tan and navy for sporty black, white and red with black/red color splashes in graphics that lend a new personality to the original 23. Inside, we found triple-tone upholstery in white, dark gray and red piping. Nothing says “sport model” better. There are bucket seats for the skipper and passenger and those sporty flip-up bolsters and armrests. Aft bench seats wrap around the cockpit. Forward seating includes wraparound benches with three bolstered backrests — two face forward and one aft for easily seating three in the deep area.

A wind dam closes the cockpit from the bow, extending boating comfort into cooler days of spring and fall.

The helm station is a beauty, with gun barrel cylinders for the speedo and tachometer and smaller gauges for temperature, volts, water depth and more. Our test model was equipped with Perfect Pass, the ideal tool for perfect ski runs with consistent speeds for your riders. Keeping a steady throttle setting by hand is easy too, thanks to the armrest holding your throttle elbow in the ideal spot.

Our test boat was powered by a MerCruiser 8.2-liter V-8 that cranked up 380 horsepower. It stepped on plane in 2.4 seconds and reached 30 mph in a crazy-fast 3.8 seconds. With a taller-pitch prop, the boat might have hit the 60 mph mark, but at the expense of a little of its blistering acceleration.

For storage, the 23 SS sports a ski locker in the sole and a large pullout compartment under the aft starboard bench. On the port side another deep compartment has a drop-down door and is ideal for stowing towels or sports toys.

Access to the extended swim platform is via the central walkway over the bench seat and sun pad. Pull out the center cushions and beneath is a bleached teak-look surfboard mat that offers a great appearance and even better traction.

And the wakeboard tower on our tester? What better way to speak performance, power, sports and all-American boating fun?
