M2 21 Sport Cat

Scratch the surface with this fish fighter.

They Fish: The 21 Sport Cat is a 21′-by-8′ center console cat that can fill different roles: yacht tender, dayboat, and fish fighter.

We Fish: It’s the ride, baby. What sets this boat apart is its hybrid cat/hydrofoil hull. On test day we couldn’t buy a knee-jarring bump. The boat seems to settle softly into the water regardless of what it encounters. In addition to the lack of pounding, performance is top notch thanks to the triple hydrofoil system-a boomerang-shaped wing between the sponsons amidships and two aft foils-that lifts the hull out of the water and creates less drag. As a result, less horsepower is required for good speed. It even runs well on a single engine. Other features? Check out that big boat console. The molded ridges are similar to lines you’d see on a 60′ Azimut. That said, the upholstery could use an inch more padding to jibe with the overall top-quality fit and finish. No worries if you’re pulling side-to to Mom’s Mink, because this boat’s rubrail is a huge rubber bumper, ready to protect you from ever hearing that fateful fiberglass crunch.

Who Will Want One: Center console stalwarts who like refinement and superior seakeeping ability.
