The New Jersey-based Offshore Powerboat Association is the classic-rock station of the sport, providing owners of older boats with the opportunity to still compete for checkered flags. Many of the boats in the fleet at a given OPA event are open-cockpit old-school hulls with nonstepped bottoms, providing some of the best competition for fans of offshore racing to watch. Instead of offering classes for which teams need to build specific boats, the OPA has categories based on top speed in which a team can enter a boat and compete on a level playing field. The organization’s National and World Championships will be Oct. 2-5 in Solomons, Maryland.
