We Say: Our January sea trial of Boston Whaler’s 210 Montauk featured slush ice at the ramp, a 39-degree water temperature and short two- to three-foot seas driven by 15 knots of wind. We found some lee for the high-speed runs, but spent a good amount of time cruising open water at 3,500 to 4,500 rpm because this largest Montauk was so comfortable, especially when we adjusted her ride with the optional trim tabs. Try as we could, at all running angles, we weren’t able to make the boat throw spray above her gunwales — or make anything shake or rattle.

The Mercury 200 Verado is the logical choice for a family that wants to do a lot of skiing, wakeboarding and towing, but Whaler performance numbers suggest that an angler might choose Mercury’s new 150 FourStroke. The interior layout is suited to multiple uses and can be optioned with features like a bow deck that quickly converts to a sun pad, a head in the console, a tow arch, a T-top and a full-width stern seat.

Who’d Want One: Boaters seeking utility, seaworthiness and unsinkability.

Another Choice: EdgeWater’s 205CC with a Yamaha F200) is 10 inches shorter but similar in beam and weight to the 210 Montauk. This boat is also unsinkable.
