Premier 220 Sunspree

Premier builds so many impressive large pontoons with outsize features that it’s easy to forget it does small well too. The 220 Sunspree is a good reminder of that. It’s a 22-footer with quality features that’s offered at a very appealing sticker price. The base boat, for instance, costs just $17,139. Our tester, outfitted with a Honda BF60 outboard and a few extra amenities, had a manufacturer’s suggested price just north of $28,000. These days, there aren’t too many boats capable of entertaining 10 people that cost under $30,000.

With that 60 hp Honda, our test boat reached a top speed of 22.1 mph. Dial back the throttle and you can leisurely cruise the lake all day long. There’s more than enough juice to pull tubers; keep the tow line clear with the optional ski tow bar.

The driver has good command of the boat from the Ensign helm, which features easy-to-read gauges inset in faux wood paneling. There are the stereo controls, a 12-volt plug-in, a cup holder and an ergonomic steering wheel. The sporty Admiral helm chair ensures time spent at the wheel will be comfortable.

The forward lounge features plush Signature Series furniture with roto-molded seat bases providing stowage underneath. The starboard side has a forward-facing recliner back to create a chaise lounge. The L-shaped aft furniture features a rear-facing recliner, and there’s a pedestal-mounted cockpit table for entertaining.

Boaters will love the Sunspree’s three boarding gates. There’s one on the bow to access the forward platform, and there’s one on the port side for easy boarding from the dock. The third gate is the double-wide one that provides excellent access to the swim platform. From there, it’s easy-in, easy-out thanks to the five-step telescoping swim ladder, a feature you’ll come to appreciate if your kids are water rats. Both the bow and the swim platform have durable, easy-to-clean vinyl flooring that provides traction under wet feet.

Overall, the Premier 220 Sunspree offers a fantastic layout and a nice ride at a very nice price.
