Since July has traditionally been a big month for offshore powerboat racing, it seems appropriate to recognize the first V-bottom that ran 100 mph in an American Power Boat Association sanctioned kilo event in 1981 in Tennessee. It was a 30-foot Velocity that ran twin big-block engines with TRS drives, and it competed in the Offshore B class. Legendary racer and promoter Gene Whipp and Velocity founder and designer Steve Stepp were the crew in the boat when it topped the century mark.
