We Say: A handsome, open-bow runabout with lots to offer for a modest price, the Monterey 186MS has a clean layout, a low-maintenance fiberglass cockpit sole, a handy transom walk-through and a substantial sun pad.

Monterey maximized space in this sub-19-footer. Upholstery is durable and boasts double- and triple-stitched seams that won’t rip under the constant torment of feet and ultraviolet rays. We love the 186MS’s convenient walk-through to the swim platform even though it comes at the expense of some stowage. The swim platform is massive and sits at about floating dock height, which is convenient for boarding from shore. The design integrates with the sun pad, creating a multipurpose area that neatly unites transom and cockpit.

The helm is simple and ergonomic with analog gauges and toggle switches, and we like the fact that it is finished underneath where many manufacturers leave sharp edges. The Jensen stereo remote control proved convenient, and the engine controls are the reliable, cable-operated type. When we cornered the throttle, the 186MS planed in 5.4 seconds and topped-out at 39.2 mph.
