Rinker roared back into the outboard runabout world in 2012. If the preponderance of new outboard boats is an indication, that proved to be a trendsetting move. For 2013, the Indiana builder’s 186 bowrider gets the fish-and-ski treatment. And it’s not just a token effort. The package includes a bow-mount trolling motor, Lowrance fish finder, two fishing seats (with a choice of three pedestal positions, two aft and another one in the bow), livewell under the aft-bench center cushion, bow fill-in cushion, rod holders and a ski pylon. Remove the bow cushions to reveal a nonslip casting deck. Ditto aft.
Other than the fact that the aft bench consists of two chairs and a center cushion, the balance of the 186 BR OB is classic runabout. In the bow, plush V-shaped seating spans the perimeter of the cockpit. Adequate cockpit depth will put nervous parents at ease — one rides in this boat, not on it. The main cockpit offers twin captain’s chairs and a small sun pad behind those aft seats. Skis and boards can be stowed in the in-floor ski locker. A Sony stereo with two speakers dishes out the requisite tunes.
Multiple engine choices are available. Our test boat was equipped with a Yamaha F115, which pushed the boat onto plane in 4.6 seconds, passed 30 mph in 10.6 seconds, and topped out just shy of 40 mph.
