We Say: Like Leonardo da Vinci or Ben Franklin, the True North Yachts 34 Outboard Express can do many things exceedingly well.

Powered by twin 250 hp Yamaha outboards, its shallow draft allows weekending a crew of four anchored in the privacy of less trafficked coves. With its generous cockpit, and because removable canvas closes off the aft end of the deckhouse, the freest passage of crew results. This makes the 34 Outboard Express ideal as a platform for diving and fishing, or as a mothership from which to launch a surfing or paddle craft expedition. There is massive stowage beneath the cockpit sole in the space the engines occupy in the inboard version of this boat.

The Yamahas delivered 1.5 mpg while cruising and proved quiet and smoke-free. For skippers who object to the smell of diesel, or to raising their voice while entertaining, the 34 Outboard Express stands as an alternative to similar boats with inboard power.

In the deckhouse, the galley, helm and huge L-lounge deliver a great view. Belowdecks, a private V-berth, enclosed head and lockers aplenty await. The decor mixes low-maintenance practicality and top-quality workmanship with “just enough” joinerwork. Genius.

Who’d Want One: Adventurous, multifaceted boaters.

Another Choice: The Chris-Craft Launch 36 ($525,210 with triple Mercury Verado 300 outboards).
