HMS Bounty, the starring ship of the 1962 film “Mutiny on the Bounty”, sank on Monday, October 29 after large waves and high winds from Hurricane Sandy battered the vessel approximately 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, N.C.
A total of 16 crew were onboard, and 14 were able to make it safely into two lifeboats where they awaited rescue by the United States Coast Guard. One crew member, 42-year-old Claudene Christian, was unresponsive when rescuers plucked her from the sea and ultimately perished. Captain Robin Walbridge remains missing.
The 180-foot ship was making its way from New London, Connecticut to St. Petersburg, Florida where it was to be docked for tours the weekend of November 10. It was also used during the filming of “Treasure Island”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”.
