You might think that competitors in events like the Bermuda Challenge are filthy rich. While that’s sometimes true, it’s mostly not.
This year’s challengers (and one-time record holders) Chris Fertig and Tyson Garvin for example, financed their campaign by securing sponsors. The process is little different from what Girl Scouts do with cookies (though the dollars are bigger). They knock on real and metaphoric doors and ask for money.
We’ve included the list of their sponsors here, and in other Bermuda Challenge coverage. But Boating hasn’t received compensation for doing so. Nor are we asking for it. We are the stewards of the Bermuda Challenge, providing the timekeeping and the coverage and keeping the trophy. Our pleasure is in the fact that another challenge can take place, that the limits of powerboating, powerboat equipment, and boaters themselves, can be tested once again.
It takes all the courage, skill and determination that mariners like Fertig and Garvin can muster to run a Bermuda Challenge. But it wouldn’t happen without sponsorship.
