2022 Bennington L23 Swingback

The L23 Swingback is sure to be a family pleaser.

Bennington’s 2022 L23 Swingback is a high-quality, feature-packed, midpriced performer, with Mercury 200 FourStroke power reaching speeds of 40 mph at 5,850 rpm. It is an economical cruiser; our best mileage was a thrifty 4.7 mpg at 3,000 rpm and 17 mph, where the 200 burned just 3.6 gph. This is just the right speed for everyday cruising, be it a dinnertime run or a midday jaunt. At that speed, the noise level was a low 70.5 dB(A), easily quiet enough for normal conversation. It’s sure to be a family pleaser at just over $90,000 as tested.

Abovedecks, the diamond-stitched upholstery is surrounded by graphite Simtex vinyl with vibrant Monaco blue accenting. High-speed USB charging ports abound for everyone’s phones. Upfront, forward-facing lounges feature deep well seating and recessed pocketing for a comfortable and secure feel while underway. The portside seating is a bit shorter than the starboard side, but together there’s room for at least five or six without crowding. The pilot’s console features a Simrad GO7 screen, with all vessel and engine information at the driver’s fingertips. A Rockford Fosgate stereo provides plenty of volume.

Aft, there’s a spacious wide lounge with a multiposition backrest for aft- or forward-facing seating or lounging. A full-perimeter stainless-steel rail with a swing-access gate provides security for those aboard. On the starboard side of the aft lounge, the swing gate allows access to the extended aft deck, with a stainless-steel ski tow and black powder-coated, curved folding aluminum boarding ladder.

Construction and fit-and-finish are pure Bennington; the underconsole seating inspection reveals tight, clean and well-placed wiring and hose routing. Wiring and hose connections are secure and supported. There’s plenty of open storage under each seat cushion, as well as under the pilot’s console. Recessed seat bases provide a subtle improvement in available deck space and better footing when accessing the underseat storage. The L23 Swingback is a great value, packed with comforts for those who want Bennington features, quality and performance at a midlevel price point.
