Chrome switches, chrome cup holders, a sporty metallic black panel at the helm: The Princecraft Vectra 23 we tested showcased myriad upgrades for 2014, Princecraft’s 60th anniversary year.

Our test boat could also boast installation of Princecraft’s Sport Package, which includes lifting strakes, an underdeck spray shield and a unique central pontoon that is three-quarters of the length of the two outboard logs. In addition to upping the boat’s rated horsepower allowance, the Sport Package is designed to enhance performance. Adjusting the tilt wheel just so, we put the Vectra 23’s 115 hp Mercury 115 FourStroke outboard in gear and accelerated across the lake. The boat hustled to more than 32 mph at top speed and attained 30 mph in about eight seconds. Those are good numbers from such economical power. Handling proved confident, the Vectra 23 negotiating turns at speed with aplomb and close-quarters maneuvers at the dock with grace.

The Vectra 23 earns high marks for good looks. For 2014 Princecraft’s Classic Edition of the boat incorporates a monochrome theme interior that delivers understated elegance. For more elegance, there is now an upgraded helm seat that we found both attractive and comfortable during our test. Its easy adjustability allowed for excellent vision regardless of speed or attitude. The boat’s side panels are decorated in startling graphics that look great.

Small details that impressed included the LED installed under the console: Indirect light from this lent a romantic, yet functional illumination to the helm area and beyond. The 160-watt stereo installed aboard our test boat ensured music for the party and comes Bluetooth ready. A handy 12-volt outlet provides power for a spotlight, mobile phone or other device.

Princecraft’s Vectra 23 proved to be one of the most versatile pontoons we’ve tested, and after carefully evaluating Princecraft’s construction method, and with prices starting under $20,000, we can see why the Quebec boatbuilder chose the motto “Dominate the Water.”
