Sportfishing Boat Crashes Into the USS Midway Museum in Alleged BUI Incident

Consider this YouTube video, posted by CBS 8 San Diego, exhibit one of why you shouldn’t drink and boat. This vessel, described in news reports as a 50-foot sportfisherman, crashed into the USS Midway Museum in San Diego on Friday, then fled the scene before being apprehended by the local harbor police.

Police then arrested the boat’s captain on suspicion of boating under the influence. The USS Midway served as a Naval aircraft carrier for nearly five decades, operating in the Vietnam War and other major military operations before being decommissioned in 1992 and opening as a museum in San Diego in 2004.

The incident happened on Friday, with reports placing the time of the collision between 11:49 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. After the boat left the scene, Harbor Police intercepted it near the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. While some news reports stated the crash caused $100,00 in damage, others reported no significant damage to the historic ship.

Boating under the influence is a serious issue, with a Coast Guard report from 2020 stating that alcohol contributed to 296 reported boating accidents. So if you’re planning to take the helm, don’t take a sip.
