Our first look at the Standard 19 revealed classic lines. They were reminiscent of an older ski boat but styled with modern facets and crisp angles. The cockpit was spacious and more so for the simplicity of the fore and aft lounges. Also reminiscent of a classic ski boat was the price: $29,000, including the wakeboard tower and Smartcraft speed control with a MerCruiser DTS Scorpion engine.

Phil Shearer, the company founder, builds with a “green” infusion method that reduces emissions. This was hull No. 1 and downright impressive in spite of the Spartan interior and a few gelcoat flaws we found on the exterior. The ride was typical inboard — fast acceleration, tight cornering and a top speed of about 45 mph.
