Flash in the Pan

Want to catch gigantic panfish like this croaker? Use these bottom-fishing tips.

  • Bottom-feeding panfish use scent, as much as sight, to help locate food, so be sure to offer them odiferous baits-dipping baits or lures in menhaden or crab oil works wonders.
  • Bottom feeders often have down-turned mouths, which are smaller than those on fish that feed on the surface. Downsize your hooks accordingly.
  • Panfish often feed in areas where the current scours the bottom, stirring up food. Dragging a small anchor or a cinderblock to stir up the bottom will sometimes put them into feeding mode.
