Brush, buildings and bulkheads provide cooling shade. After dark, street lamps and dock lights attract baitfish while creating shadow lines that game fish relish as points of ambush.

Strong breezes push baitfish against lee shores and provide easy, downwind casting.


Surfcasters often find gamesters just out of reach. With a partner, ease your vessel behind the breakers to pick up these fish. Safety first: Keep the engine running, the bow pointed offshore, and rotate fishing and helm duties.

Mini coves, points and breaks in weed edges beg a cast. The slightest outcropping from cattails or Phragmites is a likely ambush point for predators.
