A new sanctioning body for offshore powerboat racing, the Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix (OPGP), was formed in the last half of 2014, and one of its biggest announcements has been that it will be offering multimedia and TV coverage for the sport in 2015. Torque TV will air the organization’s races on its website and will distribute it to the masses on CBS Sports Network in one-hour highlight shows on weekdays in prime time and on weekend afternoons. International network Mundial will also provide significant coverage of all OPGP events.

“This is going to give much-deserved North American and worldwide exposure to the sport of offshore powerboat racing,” said Jason Miller, General Manager of the OPGP. “The racers who put their hearts and souls into this sport are going to reap the benefits of this exposure, reaching fans who can’t make the races, as well as new fans worldwide.”

The TV coverage is big news for teams who are trying to finalize sponsorships for the five-race 2015 season that will include one of the sport’s most famous venues, Sarasota, Florida, on July 4th weekend as its cornerstone. Race weekends will include testing and pole-position qualifying on Saturdays followed by class racing on Sundays. The OPGP is also staging the Qatar Cup in February 2015. The event will take place in Doha, Qatar, and while no official announcement has been made, the new organization has at least tacit support from the Qatar Marine Sports Federation.
