Slightly larger than a hockey puck and nearly as indestructible, this non-incendiary flare flashes SOS and burns continuously for visibility in a variety of intensities and flashing patterns. Due to international laws, the USCG is slow to accept it as a replacement for dangerous burning flares, so it won’t satisfy the water cops, but it will add to your safety options should you need to be rescued. It floated in our test tank and has a ring for a lanyard. It burns up to 100 hours depending on the setting. We dropped this one into our safety kit with the incendiaries and our non-USCG-approved laser flare — times are changing. $49.95; powerflare.com
