About 15 feet long, of low freeboard and propelled by the slip-free thrust of a water jet, Sea-Doo’s 150 Speedster delivers a watercraft’s thrills. But with its wide beam, four seats and the confident agility it displayed while docking during our test, it makes a great runabout.

Top speed approaches 60 mph — if you opt for the supercharged engine we tested — and the hull shape allows for swooping through turns with impunity. Dockside, thrust and control are always available, whether in forward, neutral or reverse. Shuttling between these three modes makes for outstanding slow-speed handling: After just a few minutes at the controls, we were making the 150 Speedster move sideways.

A pop-up ski pylon is standard, and the optional tow tower is far forward, preventing skiers from pulling this diminutive dynamo’s stern around during maneuvers. There is stowage throughout the boat, and the seating is both secure and comfortable. We counted eight grab rails throughout and determined that the boarding ladder is robustly mounted.

An intelligent electronic throttle-control system lets you choose between economy (ECO) and docking modes. You can also choose between two color schemes. All that’s left to decide is how much water to shred.
